Lightbringer Counseling Services

Where a light upon your path may reveal new truths

My name is Adriel Algiene and I’m a Professional Counselor Associate. I’m a Latino, gay, cisgender man, and I believe everyone has the power to grow, make meaningful choices, and feel truly at home within themselves. My goal is to create a space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered.

I have worked with many clients including those from the LGBTQ Community as well as those from differing cultural and ethnic backgrounds who have experienced trauma, grief, and anxiety. I find that my identities of being both queer and Latino help my perspective in supporting those with intersecting identities and of minority cultures who want to work through challenges and life issues. I believe that Counseling should be as accessible to those in marginalized communities and cultures that struggle to find access.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance and a Masters of Science in Counselor Education emphasis in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Music has been a lifelong passion, but my desire to connect with people on a deeper level led me to pursue counseling later in life. I believe counselors are healers of the soul, and that art fosters both a profound connection and resonating communication between all of us.

Professional Disclosure Statement

Welcome to Lightbringer Counseling Services. I’m excited that you have decided to take this next step in counseling and trusting me to join in your journey forward. I believe that clients have the ability to improve their lives and deserve to feel empowered in their choices, make positive decisions, and feel truly at home with themselves while reaching their goals. I bring my authentic self into my therapeutic relationships with clients so that they feel listened to, understood, and equipped in their decisions as they journey through life. I collaborate with clients to explore the impacts of systems of oppression that can affect their lives.

My evidenced based approach utilizes various therapeutic methods to work with my clients and their individual needs. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Narrative Therapy through a multicultural, feminist, and queer lens tailored to fit my client’s needs. I believe that clients are capable of working with their behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. My role in the relationship is to assist in the client’s personal growth and development while honoring the client’s  individual knowledge, power, culture, experiences, and identities and supporting the client's decisions as they navigate life to their goals.

I hold a Master’s degree in Counseling from Portland State University with a focus on individual mental health counseling and group counseling. I also hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance, in which sometimes I incorporate an artistic element into therapy with my clients by utilizing Narrative Therapy or Creative Arts Therapy.

Theoretical Orientation and Philosophy

My counseling philosophy is grounded in an integration of Narrative Therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I believe that people make sense of their lives through the stories they tell and the beliefs they carry—stories that are often shaped by relationships, culture, conflict, and past experiences. When these narratives become restrictive or negative, they can lead to emotional distress and self-defeating patterns. Narrative Therapy helps clients explore, challenge, and rewrite these dominant stories to reflect their strengths, values, and hopes. CBT complements this by focusing on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, providing practical tools to identify and shift unhelpful thinking patterns. Together, these approaches support clients in gaining insight, developing new perspectives, and building coping skills for meaningful change.

I view human development as a continuous, adaptive process shaped by meaning-making, learned responses, and life-living. People grow when they feel heard, empowered, and equipped with tools to navigate life’s challenges. I aim to create a safe, collaborative relationship where clients feel respected and understood, as the therapeutic relationship is central to both approaches. My techniques include story re-authoring, externalizing and deconstructing problems, cognitive restructuring, and thought tracking, all of which promote healing, personal growth, and long-term resilience. Whether addressing current and past struggles or supporting wellness and prevention, my goal is to help clients reclaim authorship and autonomy over their lives and develop a stronger, more compassionate sense of self.

Social Justice

I believe Social Justice and Liberation are essential for all identities and experiences. Systems of power and oppression affect even the highly-privileged and can lead to harm, grief, and disconnection with both the self and community. My goal is to be both a support and an advocate for the marginalized and the oppressed by addressing and deconstructing power dynamics, systemic oppression of minorities, and dehumanization. By creating and holding safe space for Clients to express their anger, sadness, hurt and heartache without judgment or fear of retaliation or shame I hope to create new ways for Clients to express themselves and move forward into an empowering future.
